From the very beginning, God has revealed Himself through the world He created. Nature isn’t just a backdrop to our lives—it’s a living testimony of His power, wisdom, and divine presence. When we step outside, we aren’t just taking a break from screens or getting some fresh air; we are walking into a classroom where God is the teacher, and creation is the lesson.
Nature Declares the Glory of God
The Bible is filled with verses that remind us how creation points to its Creator. Isaiah 55:12 says:
"You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands."
Imagine walking through a quiet forest, standing atop a mountain, or hearing the waves crash along the shore—these moments are not just scenic; they are invitations to worship. Every intricate detail in creation, from the patterns on a butterfly’s wings to the towering majesty of ancient trees, points to a God who is intentional, powerful, and ever-present.
A Parent’s Role in Connecting Kids to God’s Creation
As parents, we have an incredible opportunity to guide our children into this outdoor classroom and help them see God’s handiwork firsthand. Too often, children are surrounded by screens, confined within walls, and detached from the natural world. But something profound happens when they step outside—they experience awe, curiosity, and a deeper sense of God’s presence.
Growing up, I was blessed with parents who loved the outdoors. Some of my best childhood memories include camping under the stars, watching wildlife, and learning to build a fire from scratch. My love for adventure only grew as I joined the Boy Scouts, where I made lifelong friendships and learned invaluable life skills.
Now, as a father, I am intentional about passing this same gift on to my children. I want them to experience the joy of roasting marshmallows over a campfire, the excitement of spotting a deer in the woods, and the quiet peace of a sunrise hike. More importantly, I want them to recognize these moments as encounters with the Creator Himself.
How You Can Cultivate a Love for the Outdoors in Your Children
Many parents feel they need elaborate outdoor trips to make an impact. But building a connection with nature doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. You don’t need a ten-day camping safari—what matters most are the small, consistent experiences that help children appreciate the world around them. Here are some simple ways to start:
✅ Go on nature walks – Even a short walk in the park can open a child’s eyes to God’s handiwork. ✅ Start a nature journal – Encourage kids to draw or write about what they see outside. ✅ Watch the sunrise or sunset together – A simple but powerful way to marvel at God’s creation. ✅ Create outdoor challenges – Let them build a fort, climb a tree, or learn how to make a fire. ✅ Memorize scripture in nature – Tie Bible verses to what they see outside (e.g., Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God…”).
The Lasting Impact of Raising Outdoor Christian Kids
When children develop a love for nature, they grow in confidence, resilience, and faith. They learn patience from fishing, responsibility from caring for plants and animals, and perseverance from hiking difficult trails. Most importantly, they begin to see God’s fingerprints in the world around them.
This journey of raising outdoor-loving, faith-filled kids is one I explore deeply in my book, “Raising Outdoor Christian Kids.” Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or a parent looking for practical ways to get started, my book provides actionable steps, encouragement, and biblical wisdom to help you instill a love for God’s creation in your children.
